World number 5 too strong for Boonyaprapa


Naphong Boonyaprapa and Rhys Davies advanced furthest for England in singles competition at the ISF World Schools Gymnasiade in France, reaching the last 16.

All eight England players qualified through the group stages, with the four boys winning their group and the four girls all finishing runners-up.

In the preliminary round, Olly Cornish and Erin Green went through, but Bertie Kelly, Lauren Loosemore, Samadhi Udamulla and Amy Marriott all went out.

In the last 32, Davies beat an Armenian opponent while Boonyaprapa beat a Jordanian player. Cornish and Green lost to French and Romanian opponents respectively.

The last 16 saw Boonyaprapa take on Romanian Iulian Chirita, ranked No. 5 in the U17 world rankings, and the Englishman fought hard before losing 3-1 (11-5, 5-11, 12-10 , 11-9). Chirita won the competition.

Davies faced Aziz Zarehbin of the United States and fought back 2-0 to lead until a decisive match before going out 3-2 (12-10, 11-8, 11-13, 7-11, 11-5 ).

The doubles competitions take place on Saturdays.
