Tennis: Serena and Venus Williams plummet from the WTA rankings

Ddespite being arguably the most dominant family to ever grace the world of tennis, both Serena and Venus Williams dropped dramatically in the World Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

Monday saw the updated pro player rankings, and it was striking how Serena fell to 247th place in the standings. Even at 40, that’s a shocking drop, despite not having played in a single tournament since Wimbledon this summer.

Not since November 3, 1997, has the younger Williams sister been so low in the rankings, her position of 304 having been recorded more than two decades ago. Venus now sits at a disappointing 467.

Serena hasn’t won a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2017, while Venus hasn’t even played in a tournament since August.

Due to their low ranking, the duo can only return to the professional circuit if they receive specific invitations from the organizers.

Osaka also falls

Naomi Osaka was another player who saw her rankings drop after a mixed year, in which she was unable to defend her Australian Open crown and struggled with mental health issues. She saw her ranking drop to 85.

Roger Federer is ranked 30th in the men’s rankings, while Novak Djokovic starts week 359 atop the ATP rankings despite not having played a single tennis match this season.
